Some of us network admins have so little time, it is hard to believe that we can make it through a day without something totally taking us by surprise...especially if you are a small IT shop and have no real budget for network or email monitoring.

Now, this is not to say that monitoring isn't important and that you should avoid putting down some cash for a decent solution, but free tools are always more than welcome.

If you are in charge of your Exchange server (note I did not say 'servers'), then you can download this handy monitor tool to watch your Exchange server critical statistics from your desktop...but, it only works with one server at a time.

From the SolarWinds website:
"This free desktop dashboard continuously monitors Microsoft® Exchange servers to deliver real-time insight into Exchange services, mail queue sizes, and host server health. With Exchange Monitor at your fingertips, you'll be able to track Exchange health at-a-glance and ensure this mission-critical app never fails you."
This little utility hangs out in your Systray, and will show an alert indicator if one of the monitored thresholds are met. Nice, but I wouldn't mind seeing a popup alert, or perhaps an audible notice of some sort, but it is free.

The utility will watch specified Exchange services, processor utilization, virtual memory availability and free disk space. Setting the thresholds is super easy - just enter your values and that's it.

I would like to see the ability to watch more than one Exchange server, in addition to the aforementioned audible/visual alerts. But hey, any help for us Exchange admins is welcome!

Note: you will need to register some information before you download.
