Google Apps for Mobilehttp://www.google.com/mobile/Not that this is terribly new, but I found out about it recently since I was wanting to keep up with my wife's (and my) personal schedules on Google Calendar. Since I have a BlackBerry, I figured there would be something out there that would do the trick...
Awhile back, when I had data services originally (we disabled them for awhile when I was transitioning jobs), I tried out
GCalSync, an application that could synchronize your Google Calendar with your BlackBerry (there's also
Goosync, btw). I did have a couple minor issues with the application, but overall, it was very good.
Now that I've re-enabled data services on my phone, I've discovered that Google has a whole slew of
mobile applications (not just for BlackBerry) that you can use to make your life just that much more productive while you're on the move.
In particular, Google has released
Google Sync for BlackBerry - an application that can synchronize your Google Calendar to/from your BlackBerry calendar. So, now on my BlackBerry, I have all my wife's shared appointments, in addition to my own stuff (I need to take the dog in this weekend for a checkup at the vet, right - got it).
The really nice thing? I can synchronize my Google calendar to my BlackBerry
one way if I want. That way, I don't have to worry about my work stuff getting moved to my online calendar (although I
could, if I wanted)...makes it easier on the eyes for anyone else who you might be sharing your calendar with.
Want to install it over the air with your BlackBerry? Browse to
http://m.google.com/sync from your BB and it will install for you. Obviously, you'll need a gmail account to make it work.
Google has a whole slew of mobile applications that you can try, and they're not all just for the BlackBerry, including:
- Search - A better way to search with Google from your mobile
|
- Maps - Locate nearby businesses and services
|
- GmailNew! - A faster way to get Gmail on the go
|
- SMS - Get quick info from Google
|
- YouTubeNew! - Watch and upload videos from anywhere
|
- GOOG-411 - Use voice to find local businesses on the go
|
- News - Read up on the latest news from anywhere
|
- Picasa - View photo albums on your mobile
|
- Blogger - Post photos and share experiences from your mobile device
|
- Reader - Read your favorite blogs and news feeds on the go
|
- DocsNew! - View your Google Docs on the go
|
- NotebookNew! - View and enter notes on the go
|
The really cool news? The Google Contacts API has been released, so you know that someone (probably Google!) will have a way to synchronize your contacts from Gmail to your phone very soon.
This would be great news for those that are using Google applications for their workforce but don't have the budget for something like a BlackBerry Enterprise or Exchange 2K3+ server (ActiveSync for Windows Mobile).
Next, if Google Sync could synchronize tasks and memos in addition to contacts, we'd have a great online sync solution that would be great for SOHO users...

Thank you for mentioning Google Notebook. I just tried it and immediately liked the new application. Pretty slick. BTW, the URL of Google Notebook should be: http://www.google.com/notebook ; The URL of Google docs should be: http://docs.google.com/ .
Thanks Alek - got those links updated!
