Sometimes you need to upgrade your hard drive since it ran out of space, or is beginning to give you some trouble. In these cases you need to quickly get the contents of your old drive to your new drive. It used to be back in the old days you had to run an XCopy (or similar command) or run a payware utility like Ghost to do this.
While I absolutely love Ghost, I don't really like the cost of it - seems that Symantec has a virtual monopoly on various data recovery and backup software thanks to the acquisition of PowerQuest and Veritas, and they don't seem to mind to pass on the expense to the customer.
I am currently in the process of integrating this into my Bart-PE disc, so I will let you know how that goes. If it works, it should make it quite a useful tool that I can distribute to my friends.
According to the website:
PC INSPECTOR™ clone maxx PC INSPECTOR™ clone maxx is the new professional hard drive copying program from CONVAR. Using the new direct DMA support, data can be copied from hard drives in high speed mode with speeds up to 3.3 GB per minute.
This high speed is achieved by PC INSPECTOR™ clone maxx through intelligent inspection of the PC motherboard and the hard drive controller. The software independently determines the fastest data transmission rate and achieves these exceptional speeds through optimal utilization of the DMA chipset on the motherboard of your PC.
PC INSPECTOR™ clone maxx can be started directly from a boot diskette. The copying process is always based on the physical drive and is independent of the file system (e.g. FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, HPFS, NTFS, Ext2, Reiser, etc.) or the number of partitions.
I'm not sure how Convar (the company that owns PC Inspector) can afford to put out utilities for free like this - and they are quality, but I say keep them coming.
Some of the other free tools they offer:
- File Recovery 4.x is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems.
- smart recovery is the new data recovery program from CONVAR for Flash Card™, Smart Media™, SONY Memory Stick™, IBM™ Micro Drive, Multimedia Card, Secure Digital Card or any other data carrier for digital cameras.
- e-maxx - professional data deletion program from CONVAR.
- task manager manipulates your tasks/programs so they can be quickly and easily started at specific times or intervals.
- fs guard is a monitoring program developed specially for WINDOWS NT™ 4.0, WINDOWS 2000™ and WINDOWS XP. PC INSPECTOR™ fs guard (fs guard) can be used for diverse purposes.
UPDATE: My friend tried this software with his SATA drives, and it wouldn't clone them, even though he turned on IDE emulation. So, it seems that this isn't 100%, but for the majority of folks using IDE, it should work. Your mileage may vary!
Alternates:
- HDClone

If only this pitiful pundit knew what Ghost was...
I have used Ghost since version 2.0 when it was owned by Ghostsoft.
This blog (if you haven't read the heading) is intended for freeware solutions ONLY -
If this were not the case, I would have gladly included Ghost into the mix (and would have been my top choice, due to:
. The ability to move partitions
. The usefulness of archiving of backed up images for new PC builds + Ghost Explorer.
. GDisk (a component of Ghost) is a great partitioning tool.
. Being able to burn your image directly from Ghost to CD is very nice - couple this with making a boot CD with an auto Ghost feature, you've got yourself a nice recovery disc.
. Extensive command-line switches for various scenarios and trouble discs
. Couple this with a bart disc - and you can easily get around RAID and other mass-storage controller issues.
I could go on, but since this is a freeware blog, it doesn't really count.
Talking 'bout free stuff, partitions' backup/restore and BartPE why not to have a look at Tom Ehlert great Drivesnapshot ?!? http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/
Red.
Very cool - I'll check this out - thanks Red :)
Looks like that one is payware (darn) - it looks good though, and it performs system backups while live...!
It's freeware. You can always run backup but restore only for 30 days. After 30 day it's enough to download it again and restore your partition...and it works fine on servers systems too... :-)
P.S. All files installed in asingle folder without DLL spread all over the system and it's enough to re-dowbload the executable only..
Hey thanks for your work on the blog here. Your link to File Recovery 4.x helped me get out of a pinch when I accidentally deleted a bunch of user files during a domain profile transfer.
Very cool - thanks for responding! Good to know that the blog (and the tools therein are helping someone out).
Update on the SATA issue - I emailed PC Inspector/Convar with a question, let's see if they'll respond!
Comprehensive Review on PC Inspector Data Recovery Blog
@Jackie2k - thanks for the link! Nice work on the review, too...
It worked great for me. I've cloned two XP and Fedora dual-boot PCs with it. You seem to have run the copy between two IDE drives the same size or from a smaller IDE drive to a larger IDE drive, but it works. This freeware program solved a major problem for me, that is cloning hard drives that contain both Linux and Windows partitions. at
