Extend your desktop to another PC: Synergy

Synergy
http://sourceforge.net/projects/synergy2/

Got an old laptop sitting around?

OK, not all of us do, but if you are a computer tech with various parts sitting around, you probably do.

I downloaded and installed an application called 'Synergy' - it's an open source remote control-esque application that allows you to use another computer as another work area to your primary monitor's right/left (or above or below, if need be). Think of it as a KVM without the need for the little box!

You need to install the software on both computers that will be acting within the partnership, and configure each side accordingly. Your primary computer is the server. You must configure an alias on both stations saying that your secondary station is at the right of your primary, your primary is at the left of the secondary, etc. -

Once you've configured both sides, you activate the server and client, and just as quick as that, you can seemlessly move your mouse from one monitor to the other.

One very nice (but seemingly minor detail, at first glance) feature is the ability to share your clipboards - well, text items are shared, but this is very nice for copying & pasting URL's, code, etc. - Note that this program doesn't actually allow you to extend your desktop to another computer, but allows you to use a second computer seamlessly as a secondary workspace, thus the limitation in sharing various OLE items (pictures, objects, etc.). Still, it is pretty darned handy.

You can find Synergy here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/synergy2/

This program is great, but it doesnt allow you to actually extend your desktop. I want to be able to move windows to the other screen etc...

Any other suggestions..or is there a way to do it on this program?

Have a look at MaxiVista - get hold of the SE version as it is free (but limited to 800x600)
